The Consultant Pediatric Emergency Physician will provide advanced emergency care to neonates, infants, children, and adolescents presenting with urgent medical, surgical, infectious, respiratory, and traumatic conditions. The role combines rapid clinical assessment, resuscitation leadership, escalation of complex cases, multidisciplinary coordination, and supervision of developing clinicians. Through close collaboration with pediatric intensive care, surgery, laboratory, radiology, and allied health teams, the consultant will help improve emergency response times, patient safety, and continuity of care across the pediatric emergency pathway.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide consultant-level emergency assessment and treatment for pediatric patients from the neonatal period through adolescence.
  • Manage acute medical presentations including severe infection, dehydration, seizures, allergic reactions, and metabolic emergencies.
  • Diagnose and stabilize respiratory distress, respiratory failure, and other time-sensitive pediatric airway conditions.
  • Assess and manage pediatric trauma in coordination with surgical, orthopedic, neurosurgical, and intensive care teams.
  • Lead multidisciplinary pediatric resuscitation teams during life-threatening emergencies.
  • Provide advanced clinical support for complex triage decisions and deteriorating patients.
  • Initiate rapid stabilization measures including airway support, vascular access, fluid resuscitation, medication administration, and emergency monitoring.
  • Coordinate escalation to Pediatric Intensive Care when patients require advanced organ support or ongoing critical care.
  • Work with pediatric surgeons and subspecialists to manage complex emergency presentations requiring specialist intervention.
  • Collaborate with laboratory and diagnostic teams to ensure rapid investigation and timely clinical decision-making.
  • Review imaging, laboratory findings, microbiology results, and physiological data in the context of acute pediatric illness.
  • Ensure accurate prioritization and safe movement of patients through emergency assessment, observation, admission, transfer, or discharge pathways.
  • Provide clear discharge instructions, follow-up recommendations, and safety-netting advice to parents and caregivers.
  • Communicate diagnoses, treatment plans, prognosis, and emergency decisions sensitively with families.
  • Mentor junior physicians, residents, nurses, and allied health professionals in pediatric emergency protocols.
  • Support training in resuscitation, trauma response, triage, and high-acuity pediatric emergency care.
  • Participate in clinical audits, morbidity and mortality reviews, and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Contribute to development and review of emergency pathways, clinical guidelines, and departmental protocols.
  • Participate in research, case review, teaching, and continuing medical education activities where applicable.
  • Maintain accurate and timely clinical documentation in line with hospital policy, regulatory requirements, and international accreditation standards.
  • Promote a culturally sensitive, family-centered approach to emergency care.
Ideal Profile
  • MBBS or equivalent medical degree from a recognized institution.
  • Completion of appropriate pediatric and emergency medicine training.
  • Board Certification in Pediatric Emergency Medicine through the American Board, UK CCT, or another recognized equivalent authority.
  • Minimum 5 years of post-specialty clinical experience, preferably in a tertiary hospital environment.
  • Appropriate UAE consultant licensing or eligibility to obtain the required professional license.
  • Strong expertise in pediatric resuscitation, trauma, acute medical emergencies, and high-acuity clinical care.
  • Proven ability to lead emergency teams in fast-paced and high-pressure situations.
  • Experience working closely with Pediatric Intensive Care, surgical specialties, laboratory services, and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Familiarity with electronic medical record systems and internationally accredited hospital standards.
  • Demonstrated interest in improving pediatric emergency care models, trauma pathways, or departmental processes.
  • Strong communication and leadership skills with the ability to support both clinical teams and families during stressful situations.
  • Culturally competent and family-centered approach to pediatric care.
  • Fluency in English is required, while Arabic language skills are advantageous.
  • Commitment to patient safety, clinical governance, evidence-based medicine, and continuous professional development.
