Role Context

The Consultant Paediatric Cardiac Surgeon - Congenital Care will provide advanced surgical treatment for infants, children, and adolescents with congenital and acquired heart disease. The role requires exceptional operative judgment across complex congenital repairs, valve surgery, neonatal procedures, and emergency cardiac interventions. Close collaboration with paediatric cardiologists, cardiac anaesthesiologists, intensivists, perfusionists, radiologists, nursing teams, and allied specialists will be essential for achieving strong surgical outcomes and providing coordinated care throughout the patient journey.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform complex paediatric cardiac surgery for congenital and acquired heart disease.
  • Undertake surgical correction of congenital heart defects using established evidence-based techniques.
  • Perform open-heart procedures for infants, children, and adolescents requiring advanced cardiac intervention.
  • Conduct valve repair and replacement procedures when clinically indicated.
  • Perform arterial switch operations for suitable congenital cardiac conditions.
  • Undertake Tetralogy of Fallot repair and other complex congenital heart procedures.
  • Provide comprehensive pre-operative assessment and determine individualized surgical strategies.
  • Coordinate intra-operative management with cardiac anaesthesia and perfusion teams.
  • Provide postoperative surgical oversight and collaborate closely with Paediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Unit teams.
  • Manage critically ill postoperative cardiac patients alongside intensivists and multidisciplinary specialists.
  • Review echocardiography, cardiac imaging, laboratory findings, catheterization data, and other diagnostic investigations.
  • Develop individualized surgical treatment plans based on anatomy, clinical status, risk, and long-term prognosis.
  • Participate in emergency cardiac surgery services and on-call coverage according to departmental requirements.
  • Monitor recovery through inpatient reviews, outpatient follow-up, and long-term postoperative surveillance.
  • Counsel families regarding diagnoses, treatment options, operative risks, expected outcomes, and future cardiac care.
  • Collaborate with paediatric cardiologists, cardiac anaesthesiologists, perfusionists, intensivists, radiologists, and nursing teams.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary cardiac conferences, morbidity and mortality meetings, and complex case discussions.
  • Maintain accurate consultation notes, operative reports, treatment plans, procedure records, and follow-up documentation.
  • Contribute to clinical audits, patient safety initiatives, quality improvement programs, and cardiac service development.
  • Participate in clinical research, scientific publications, teaching, and continuing medical education.
  • Supervise and mentor junior surgeons, residents, fellows, and allied healthcare professionals.
  • Maintain strict compliance with infection control, surgical safety, clinical governance, and ethical medical practice.
Ideal Profile
  • Medical degree such as MBBS, MD, or equivalent from a recognized institution.
  • Completion of accredited Residency training in Cardiothoracic Surgery.
  • Fellowship in Paediatric Cardiac Surgery from a recognized institution.
  • Board Certification such as American Board, FRCS, Arab Board, European Board, or equivalent.
  • Minimum 5-10 years of post-fellowship experience as a Consultant Paediatric Cardiac Surgeon.
  • Extensive operative experience in complex congenital and paediatric cardiac surgery.
  • Proven expertise in neonatal cardiac surgery and advanced congenital heart defect repair.
  • Strong experience in valve surgery, arterial switch procedures, Tetralogy of Fallot repair, and other high-risk interventions.
  • Demonstrated record of successful outcomes in a high-volume tertiary care or academic medical center.
  • GCC clinical experience is advantageous but not mandatory.
  • Valid DHA Consultant License or eligibility to obtain consultant-level licensing in Dubai.
  • Strong clinical judgment and critical care decision-making capabilities.
  • Excellent leadership and multidisciplinary teamwork skills.
  • Confident family counselling and communication abilities.
  • Academic, research, teaching, or publication experience is highly desirable.
  • Strong commitment to evidence-based medicine, patient safety, professionalism, and continuous professional development.
